Area Disc Golfers raise $1,865 for Food Bank in the Ice Bowl

(Rapid City)  The 7th Annual Disc Golf Ice Bowl was held Saturday, sponsored by Scheels All Sports.  67 warmly-dressed players teed off at 11:30 a.m. and competed in the annual fundraiser event.  The unseasonably large turnout raised a club record $1,865 to benefit Community Food Banks of South Dakota.  The fundraising efforts were highlighted by 25 players who collected $1,015 in pledges for the Food Bank

Official Ice Bowls are played at over 225 courses across the United States, Canada and Europe in January and February.  Each event is encouraged to find a local charity to support, with an emphasis on fighting hunger.  Last year’s events combined to raise over $200,000.  Locally, the Rapid City Ice Bowl is hosted by the Black Hills Disc Golf Confederacy, and since 2002 has raised $4,265 for local charities.

In the Pro Division, Rapid City’s John Anderson led all players with a 44.  Anderson, who is rated number two among South Dakota players by the PDGA, moved into the Pro division after finishing second at the 2007 Amateur World Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The strong Advanced Amateur field was led by Chris Wells of Black Hawk, who carded a 47 on his way to his first division title.  Don Altmyer of Spearfish out-dueled Rapid City’s Eric Thorstenson in a playoff to win the Masters division, after both finished tied with 50.  Another close contest in the Intermediate division found Nathan Hoogshagen of Belle Fourche in first place with a 52, with a one stroke lead over Hudson Horsley of Whitewood.  Melisa Antijunti of Pierre carded a 64 and claimed the Women’s title by one stroke over Theresa O’Connell of Rapid City.  Justin Cournoyer paced the Recreational division to win by four strokes with a 52.  Zack Smith of Pierre defeated Caleb Larimer by one stroke in the Junior Boys division, carding a 69.  The Junior Girls division was claimed by Clarissa King of Spearfish, who carded an 82.  A doubles tournament following the event was won by Bruce O’Connell and Scott Caesar, shooting a 41 in best-shot format.  Caesar was also recognized for his efforts in collecting the most pledge donations, as he raised $355 in pledges for the Food Bank.  The Community Service award went to Theresa O’Connell, in recognition of her efforts in bringing a grant for EDGE disc golf curriculum and equipment to Knollwood Elementary School.

The next tournament in Rapid City will be the Region 7 Championships, hosted by the Black Hills Disc Golf Confederacy May 2 through 4.  For more information on disc golf events in the area visit blackhillsdiscgolf.com.
